Yoennis Céspedes, el cubano número 167 en llegar a las Grandes Ligas
HAVANA TIMES, 9 de abril – El novato de los Atléticos de Oakland, el toletero Yoennis Céspedes ya perdió el récord de jonrones de la Liga Cubana, establecida la temporada pasada.
Pero al parecer, Céspedes, sin mirar atrás, ha permanecido suficientemente ocupado haciendo su propio chapoteo, a gran nivel, durante la apertura de las Grandes Ligas la semana pasada.
Después de debutar con un jonrón en su juego inaugural en Arizona durante el periodo de entrenamiento de primavera (marzo 10), el ex jugador de la provincia Granma registró sencillo y un cuadrangular decisivo durante sus dos salidas en lo que fue la apertura oficial de la Liga Americana (marzo 28-29).
Los dos juegos a finales de marzo tuvieron lugar en Asia, como parte de una breve serie de altura de la MLB realizada en el Tokyo Dome de Japón.
Luego, el 6 de abril, en su primer juego de Grandes Ligas en suelo estadounidense, Céspedes mantuvo su fuerte ritmo con un jonrón de gran alcance (calculado en más de 460 pies) en el Coliseo de Oakland.
Irónicamente, el más reciente batazo de Céspedes se produjo en el mismo estadio y en la misma fecha que el jonronero Tony Oliva, otro cubano pionero de las Grandes Ligas, jugador de Minnesota, propinara el primer vuela cercas por un Bateador Designado (BD), el 6 de abril de 1973.
La marca establecida por Céspedes en la Liga Cubana (el año pasado) cayó a principios de esta semana en La Habana, cuando su ex compañero de equipo Alfredo Despaigne elevó el estándar de 33 a 35, quedando todavía más de dos semanas por jugar en la actual campaña cubana.
Céspedes, mientras tanto, está demostrando que es un legítimo jugador de Grandes Ligas, empeñado en ganar sus $36 millones del contrato de cuatro años, firmado con el club de Oakland.
Evidentemente, todavía es demasiado temprano para empezar a ungir a Céspedes con una apuesta segura para el novato del año de la Liga Americana -una predicción que acaba de publicar el sitio digital de los Atléticos de Oakland-, algo que ningún cubano ha logrado desde el mencionado Tony Oliva en 1964.
A pesar de sus varias muestras de poder, Céspedes bateó apenas .229 en más de 11 juegos y 35 turnos al bate durante los entrenamientos de primavera. Aunque algo de la publicidad podría ser prematura, parece haber suficiente evidencia del potencial cubano como una de las estrellas ofensivas más brillantes entre el puñado de jugadores cubanos que han huido a las grandes ligas durante la última década.
Sin embargo, sólo una notable campaña como novato superará los números presentados en la temporada del 2009 por su compatriota Kendry Morales en los Angelinos de Los Ángeles (34 HR, 108 RBI, .306 ave). Aunque Morales se encontraba ya en su cuarta temporada en las Grandes Ligas en el momento en que disfrutó su año de despegue, tenía sólo 26 años; Céspedes cumplió 26 el pasado octubre.
Como el único novato cubano en cualquier plantel de Grandes Ligas para la semana de apertura de la actual temporada, Yoennis Céspedes ha llevado la lista de jugadores de Grandes Ligas de origen cubano hasta el número 167 y contando.
El último de la Isla en debutar fue el jardinero de los Rangers de Texas, Leonys Martín, en una convocatoria de final de temporada hecha por los campeones de la Liga estadounidense el pasado otoño. Martin comenzará la actual campaña jugando con la filial AAA de Texas en Round Rock.
Los otros nueve cubanos en las listas de apertura de esta temporada son: Yonder Alonso (Padres de San Diego), Alexei Ramírez y Dayan Viciedo (Medias Blancas de Chicago), Kendry Morales (Los Angeles Angeles), José Contreras (Los Filis de Filadelfia), Yunieski Betancourt y Branyan Peña (Reales de Kansas City) y Aroldis Chapman (Rojos de Cincinnati). De este grupo, todos menos Alonso y Peña, hicieron, al menos, breves apariciones en la Liga Cubana.
Céspedes es ahora el (“desertor”) cubano número 31 en llegar a las Grandes Ligas, pero de ese número sólo un puñado han gozado del éxito de la liga (Danys Báez, Orlando Hernández, Liván Hernández, Contreras, Ramírez, Morales, Betancourt, Escobar y Rolando Arrojo encabezan la lista). Céspedes ya parece una apuesta fuerte para entrar en esta fraternidad.
Un total de 167 cubanos han llegado a Grandes Ligas.
